The Scale House
The Scale House, pictured here in 2017, is an office space that also has guest quarters. Vance built much of the furniture inside.

The Scale House is a real live grain bin built in 2000 for our farm office and the 80-ft. scale outside. It’s the only grain bin you’ll ever be in that features central heat and air, running water, computer, phone and fax. It also has guest rooms and is appointed with historic artifacts from the early days on the farm and Kansas statehood including an authentic 34-star flag from 1861 and a Beecher Bible. Vance made much of the rustic furniture often with building materials found on the farm or with family or local connection.

Why a grain bin? Architecture should look like its environment, according to noted American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. And what better says Rural America than a grain bin! Visitors from all over the world come for a tour and to sign the famous ‘signature wall.’

The Scale House been featured many places including an HGTV show and Angie’s List, newspapers, magazines, radio and all over the web.
